Crime and Punishment

Osamu Tezuka published his manga adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment in 1953, shortly after he had established himself as a dominant force in postwar Japanese comics. During this period, Tezuka was heavily influenced by Western literature and cinema, frequently adapting classic European narratives into the visual language of manga. His version sought to condense the sprawling philosophical and moral quandaries of the original novel into a streamlined, cinematic format that appealed to a growing generation of young readers in Japan.

The design of this volume reflects Tezuka's early aesthetic, characterized by rounded character features and dynamic, filmic pacing. Rather than a direct, literal translation, Tezuka interpreted the dark, psychological tension of Raskolnikov’s internal struggle through expressive character acting and simplified visual metaphors. While his later works became more complex, this piece remains a notable example of his ability to synthesize Russian existentialism with the burgeoning medium of story-driven manga, often receiving praise for its accessibility and atmospheric composition.
