Where it came from
Doraemon no Kuruma Isu no Hon, or the Doraemon Wheelchair Book, was commissioned by the Kyoyohin Foundation in Japan to serve as an educational resource regarding accessibility and assistive technology. By utilizing the universally recognized and beloved character of Doraemon, the project sought to destigmatize the use of wheelchairs among children and provide a gentle, informative introduction to the lives and challenges of those who require them for mobility.
The book features the iconic manga character in a narrative context that explains the mechanics and social etiquette surrounding wheelchairs. It was designed to bridge a gap in public health communication, moving away from dry technical manuals toward a character-driven approach that encourages empathy and understanding. Its reception was marked by its adoption as a useful tool in schools and libraries across Japan to foster inclusive environments.
