Double Marriage

Double Marriage, written and illustrated by Hikaru Ninomiya, emerged from the josei manga scene, a demographic focused on the lives and emotional landscapes of adult women. The series explores the complexities of unconventional relationships and societal expectations, fitting into a genre tradition of subverting traditional romance tropes. It was crafted during a period when manga publishers were increasingly diversifying their portfolios to include narratives centered on mature, nuanced protagonists navigating modern domestic life.

The visual style of the work is characterized by Ninomiya’s character-focused aesthetic, prioritizing expressive reactions and clear, clean linework that emphasizes the tension within the domestic settings depicted. Upon its release, the series was noted for its grounded approach to its premise, earning recognition for its ability to balance comedic elements with the weight of the central interpersonal conflicts. It remains a representative example of the character-driven storytelling found in mid-2000s Japanese serializations.
