Where it came from
Enma the Great, created by mangaka Yoshihiko Masuhara, emerged during the late 1990s as a distinctive entry in the humor-focused supernatural manga genre. The series centers on the titular character, the King of Hell, as he navigates the complexities of the human world. Masuhara developed the title to juxtapose the intimidating, legendary status of the King of Hell with the mundane and often absurd challenges of modern daily life, utilizing a sharp, expressive art style that emphasizes character reaction and comedic timing.
The design of the series reflects a blend of traditional Japanese folklore imagery and the exaggerated aesthetics common to late-90s gag manga. When initially serialized, it was noted for its departure from more serious action-oriented depictions of underworld deities. While it maintained a niche following rather than reaching the ubiquity of contemporary shonen juggernauts, it remains recognized among manga enthusiasts for its unique tonal consistency and Masuhara’s commitment to his specific brand of supernatural slapstick.
