Franciscan Institute Publications: Philosophy series

The Franciscan Institute Publications Philosophy series was established by the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University to facilitate scholarly research into the medieval scholastic tradition. Developed in the mid-20th century, these volumes were created to provide critical editions and translations of essential texts by thinkers such as William of Ockham, Duns Scotus, and Bonaventure, filling a gap in accessible primary source literature for theology and philosophy students.

The design of these volumes emphasizes academic utility, prioritizing clear typography and rigorous scholarly apparatus to aid the study of dense intellectual history. While the series emerged during a period of renewed interest in neo-scholasticism, it has remained a staple in academic libraries, respected for its commitment to the critical methodology of the Franciscan tradition rather than aesthetic ornamentation or mass-market appeal.
