GOETHES WERKE,: iv. abtheilung

The fourth division, or 'Abtheilung', of Goethe's collected works constitutes a monumental undertaking in German literary history. Originally commissioned by the Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in the late 19th century, this comprehensive project aimed to provide the definitive scholarly edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's entire literary and scientific output. The work was categorized into distinct sections, with the fourth division specifically dedicated to the author's expansive correspondence, which offers an unparalleled view into the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment and Romantic eras.

The editorial rigor of the series is attributed to a team of esteemed Weimar scholars tasked with navigating the vast archives left behind after the poet's death. Designed to be a permanent, authoritative record of his life and professional exchanges, the collection was received by the academic community as the gold standard for Goethean studies. Modern iterations, such as the volume associated with the ISBN provided, serve as historical reprints that preserve this foundational scholarly achievement for contemporary researchers and bibliophiles alike.
