Goethes Werke: IV. Abteilung - 24. Band

This volume belongs to the Weimarer Ausgabe, also known as the Sophien-Ausgabe, the definitive historical-critical edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's complete works. Commissioned by Grand Duchess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1885, the project was intended to curate and organize the author's massive literary and scientific output. The fourth division, or Abteilung, of this comprehensive collection is dedicated exclusively to Goethe’s extensive correspondence, serving as a primary source for scholars examining his personal life and professional network during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The editorial rigor applied to the twenty-fourth volume of the correspondence reflects the broader commitment of the Weimar scholars to philological precision. The design of the series adheres to the conservative, academic aesthetics of late 19th-century German publishing, prioritizing legibility and scholarly apparatus such as footnotes and chronologies over ornamental flourishes. While modern reprints like the 2017 edition under ISBN 9783744706544 maintain the classic layout, the series remains highly regarded as the gold standard for research into Goethe’s intellectual development and the social climate of the Weimar Classicism period.
