Hakuouki: Reimeiroku

Hakuouki: Reimeiroku originated as a visual novel developed by Otomate, a brand of Idea Factory, and served as a prequel to the highly successful Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan. Released to expand upon the lore of the Shinsengumi, the narrative focuses on the origin story of Ryunosuke Ibuki and the formative years of the Shinsengumi organization before the events of the original title. The visual design retains the franchise's signature aesthetic, characterized by detailed historical costumes and a soft, painterly art style intended to ground the supernatural elements in the turbulent backdrop of the Bakumatsu period.

The reception of Reimeiroku reflects the broader success of the Hakuouki franchise, which has been widely credited with popularizing the otome game genre in international markets. Critics often point to the game's departure from the protagonist-focused structure of its predecessor, shifting the perspective to provide a broader view of the Shinsengumi's ideological evolution. As part of a massive multimedia property, the title has seen numerous adaptations, including manga, anime, and stage plays, solidifying its status as a foundational entry in the romanticized historical fiction subgenre of Japanese visual novels.
