Where it came from
Heart of Thomas, or 'Thomas no Shinzo', was serialized in the manga magazine Weekly Shōjo Comic between 1974 and 1975. Created by the pioneering mangaka Hagio Moto, the work is widely regarded as a cornerstone of the shōnen-ai genre. It explores complex themes of grief, identity, and psychological turmoil within the confined, hierarchical setting of a German boarding school, marking a significant departure from the more lighthearted shōjo manga tropes prevalent at the time.
Hagio Moto’s narrative and aesthetic choices were deeply influenced by European literature and film, aiming to capture an introspective, literary sensibility that pushed the boundaries of the medium. The series was met with critical acclaim for its nuanced character development and innovative panel layouts, effectively cementing Hagio's status as a central figure in the Year 24 Group—a collective of female artists who revolutionized Japanese girls' comics by introducing mature, philosophical, and emotive storytelling.
