Henry David Thoreau: His Biography and Character

This work originates from a critical essay written by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was first published in the Cornhill Magazine in 1880. Stevenson, already a celebrated literary figure, sought to re-examine the life and legacy of Henry David Thoreau shortly after Thoreau's initial works had begun to gain widespread cultural traction. The essay serves as a nuanced, often critical appreciation that balances respect for Thoreau's transcendentalist integrity with a Victorian skepticism toward his solitary lifestyle.
