Henry David Thoreau: Representative Selections

This volume, part of the American Writers Series, was edited by Bartholow V. Crawford and published in the mid-20th century. The series was designed to provide students and general readers with curated selections of canonical American authors, framed by critical introductions that contextualized the writer's intellectual contributions within the broader scope of American literature.

Crawford’s selection process focused on highlighting Thoreau’s philosophical rigor and his observations on nature and society. The editorial approach aimed to bridge the gap between Thoreau’s localized experiences at Walden Pond and his enduring influence on political and social thought, reflecting a mid-century academic effort to solidify his place in the established literary canon.
