Historiae Ab Orbe Condito Sacrae Profanaequae Viridarium: Succincta Narratione Multorum Voluptati Consitum, Floribus Respersum, Et Clave Geographica Patefactum. Complectens ab Anno Mundi Cond. 3392 ad 3609, Ducentos nonaginta octo

Johann Baptist Frey’s work, part of a larger historical compendium, was published in the early 18th century as a pedagogical tool intended to make complex chronologies accessible to students and scholars. The title, which translates to a garden of sacred and profane history, reflects the Baroque tradition of presenting historical knowledge as a curated, ornamental landscape designed for both utility and pleasure.

The text is characterized by its use of a geographical key, a common feature in educational literature of the era designed to link historical events to specific locales. Frey’s design prioritizes clarity and mnemonic assistance, aiming to synthesize vast amounts of information into a digestible narrative. It remains a representative example of the efforts by Enlightenment-era scholars to categorize and visualize human history in relation to divine timelines.
