Where it came from
Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni is a manga series written by Ryukishi07, the creator best known for the When They Cry franchise. The story centers on a group of children in a rural village who encounter supernatural entities, blending traditional Japanese folklore with the psychological tension and mystery elements that define Ryukishi07's body of work. It was serialized in the magazine Monthly Comp Ace beginning in 2014, reflecting the author's recurring interest in the fragility of youth and the encroaching nature of dread.
The illustrations for the manga were provided by artist Akiyo Kobo, who sought to translate the author's intricate scripts into a visual language that balanced innocence with unsettling undertones. The series was designed to explore themes of isolation and collective trauma, aiming to resonate with readers familiar with the author's previous visual novel hits. Upon release, it was received as a stylistic departure that prioritized atmospheric storytelling, earning a dedicated following among fans of seinen horror-mystery manga.
