Jacarandá

Jacarandá is a manga volume by the acclaimed artist Shiriagari Kotobuki, originally published in the 1990s. The work emerged during a period when the author was shifting from traditional gag manga toward more surreal, atmospheric, and philosophical storytelling. The title reflects a departure from the frenetic pace often associated with the medium at the time, opting instead for a contemplative exploration of themes that blend the mundane with the fantastical.

The aesthetic of the volume is characterized by Shiriagari's distinctively loose, expressive line work, which serves to ground his often unsettling or dreamlike narratives. By utilizing a minimalist approach, the author sought to create a sense of unease and wonder that lingers long after the reader finishes the book. Critically, the work is regarded as a quintessential example of the 'heta-uma' style—deliberately 'bad but good'—and is celebrated by connoisseurs for its unique ability to marry visual simplicity with profound existential depth.
