Jahresberichte der Geschichtswissenschaft: JBG

The Jahresberichte der Geschichtswissenschaft was an extensive bibliographical project initiated by the Historische Gesellschaft zu Berlin in 1878. Conceived as a critical tool for the burgeoning discipline of professional history, the series aimed to provide scholars with comprehensive summaries and assessments of historical literature published annually across the globe. By cataloging and reviewing the vast output of academic historical research, the series sought to synthesize the rapid expansion of historiographical knowledge into a structured, accessible format for academic libraries and research institutes.

The design and editorial direction were deeply rooted in the nineteenth-century German tradition of rigorous, systematic scholarship. Overseen by esteemed historians and librarians of the era, the volumes were intended to act as the standard reference for the international academic community. While the publication eventually ceased in the early twentieth century due to the immense complexity of tracking an ever-growing corpus of global historical works, it remains a testament to the era's ambition to create a unified, exhaustive bibliography of historical inquiry.
