Jenaische Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung. Jahrg. 1-[38. With] Intelligenzblatt. Jahrg. 1-[38. And] Erganzungsblatter. Jahrg. 1-[29]

The Jenaische Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung was established in 1804 as a successor to the earlier Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung, following the relocation of the publication from Jena to Halle. It served as a primary organ for German intellectual discourse during the transition from the Enlightenment to Romanticism, functioning as a critical forum for philosophy, literature, and science. The publication was deeply intertwined with the University of Jena, reflecting the rigorous academic standards and the philosophical shift toward Idealism that characterized the period.

The journal was edited for much of its tenure by Christian Gottfried Schütz and featured contributions from prominent thinkers who sought to provide comprehensive, systematic evaluations of contemporary European letters. Its design and structural format were intentional, pairing the main critical reviews with the Intelligenzblatt, which provided essential commercial and institutional notices, and the Ergänzungsblätter, which offered supplementary scholarly depth. As a result, it remains an essential primary source for researchers studying the critical reception of works by figures such as Goethe, Schiller, and the early Romantic circle.
