John Constantine, Hellblazer Vol. 5: Dangerous Habits (New Edition)

Dangerous Habits was originally published as a story arc in Hellblazer issues #41–46, written by Garth Ennis with art by Will Simpson. This collection serves as a pivotal entry in the series, famously depicting Constantine’s diagnosis with terminal lung cancer and his subsequent, desperate supernatural schemes to outwit the First of the Fallen. The narrative is widely regarded by critics and readers as the quintessential Constantine story, effectively blending gritty British urban realism with high-stakes occult horror.

The 2014 new edition, published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint, compiles these seminal issues for a modern audience. While Jamie Delano is often credited with establishing the foundational tone and characterization of Constantine in the early volumes of the series, this specific volume is defined by Ennis’s darker, more cynical exploration of the character's mortality. The design retains the stark, atmospheric aesthetic consistent with the mid-nineties Vertigo branding, emphasizing the character's transition from a street-level magician to a player in cosmic existential conflicts.
