Where it came from
Justice League Origins, published as the inaugural volume of the New 52 relaunch in 2011, serves as a modernized retelling of the team's first meeting. Following the Flashpoint event, DC Comics sought to lower the barrier to entry for new readers by rebooting their continuity. This volume chronicles the initial alliance of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg as they unite to repel an invasion by the extraterrestrial tyrant Darkseid.
Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, the volume reflects a deliberate shift toward cinematic, high-stakes storytelling. Jim Lee’s character designs, characterized by modernized, armored costumes, became the visual standard for the company’s flagship heroes for several years. Upon its release, the volume was recognized for its role in reinvigorating interest in the Justice League, though it simultaneously prompted debate among long-term fans regarding the extensive changes made to the established histories of these iconic characters.
