Kaiko sareta Ankoku Heishi (30-dai) no Slow na Second Life, known in English as Chillin' in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army, originated as a light novel series written by Rokujuuyon Okazawa. First appearing on the user-generated publishing platform Shosetsuka ni Naro in 2018, the narrative explores the life of Dariel, a mid-level soldier who finds himself abruptly dismissed from his post. The series garnered attention for its departure from high-stakes fantasy tropes, focusing instead on a grounded, slice-of-life exploration of career transition and civilian life.

The transition to print was facilitated by Kodansha, who began publishing the light novel volumes with illustrations by Sage Joh in 2019. The series subsequently received a manga adaptation illustrated by Rurekuchie, which serialized in Young Magazine. The work is widely regarded for its sympathetic portrayal of an older protagonist adjusting to a new social environment, resonating with readers who appreciate character-driven stories over traditional power fantasies. Its reception eventually led to the production of an anime television series adaptation in 2023.
