Where it came from
Levius originated as a steampunk-inspired manga series written and illustrated by Haruhisa Nakata, first serialized in Monthly IKKI starting in 2013. The story is set in a post-war society where individuals participate in 'mechanical martial arts,' a brutal sport involving the integration of prosthetic limbs with steam-powered technology. Nakata envisioned a world that blended aesthetic elegance with industrial decay, drawing heavily on early 20th-century sensibilities to craft a visual narrative that felt both retro and futuristic.
The series is noted for its distinctive, clean-lined art style that emphasizes kinetic motion and the intricate mechanics of its central combat suits. Following the conclusion of its first run in Monthly IKKI, the series continued as Levius/est in Ultra Jump. Its unique blend of gritty sports drama and clockwork technology earned it a dedicated following, eventually leading to a 3D-animated adaptation on Netflix that highlighted the fluid choreography of the manga's fight sequences.
