Where it came from
Ludwig Fantasia is a short-run manga series authored by Kaori Yuki, originally serialized in the Japanese magazine Hana to Yume between 1999 and 2000. The collection reimagines classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales through a dark, Gothic lens, placing the eccentric Prince Ludwig and his servant Dorothea into subversive versions of well-known fables such as Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.
Kaori Yuki, widely recognized for her intricate and melancholic artistic style, designed these stories to juxtapose traditional folklore motifs with cynical, psychological humor. By stripping away the romanticism typical of early-twentieth-century fairy tale adaptations, Yuki aimed to highlight the absurdity and cruelty often latent in the original source material. The series was well-received by readers of the mature shōjo genre for its distinctive visual aesthetic and its satirical take on literary archetypes.
