Ludwig II (MIZUNO Hideko)

Ludwig II, created by Hideko Mizuno and serialized beginning in 1970, serves as a significant entry in the history of shōjo manga. Inspired by the life of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the series reflects the intense cultural fascination with European royalty and tragic romanticism prevalent in the Japanese girl's manga scene of the late 1960s and 70s. Mizuno utilized her signature dramatic flair to translate the king’s historical struggle with his identity and his obsessive devotion to the arts into a visually rich, emotive narrative.

The design and artistic direction of the work emphasize Mizuno's role as a pioneer who helped modernize the visual language of the genre. Her approach to the protagonist was deeply informed by the aesthetic sensibilities of the period, favoring intricate character designs and expressive, cinematic paneling. Upon its release, the series was received as a sophisticated exploration of the pressures of sovereignty and the isolating nature of creative genius, further cementing Mizuno’s reputation as a master of period drama and historical characterization.
