Macross Delta

Macross Delta emerged in 2016 as the fourth television series in the long-running Macross science fiction franchise. Directed by Kenji Yasuda and supervised by franchise creator Shoji Kawamori, the series was designed to blend the traditional mecha combat elements of the brand with a heavy emphasis on idol music, centering on the tactical sound unit Walküre. Kawamori sought to evolve the series’ established formula by integrating aerial dogfighting with performances that influence the tactical battlefield.

The production sought to distinguish itself from previous iterations by adopting a vibrant, pop-inspired visual identity. Character designs were provided by Majiro and Chisato Mita, while the mecha designs were handled by Kawamori, who focused on the variable fighter mechanics that have defined the series since 1982. Upon its release, the series received a mixed but generally positive reception, particularly noted for its high-energy musical soundtrack and the ambition of its cross-genre storytelling.
