Macross II

Macross II: Lovers Again, released in 1992, was conceived as an original video animation (OVA) series intended to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the original Macross franchise. Developed by Big West and produced by AIC, the series served as a standalone sequel that explored a separate timeline from the main series, focusing on a conflict involving the Mardook, an alien race that utilizes song as a weapon. This iteration was notable for its attempt to evolve the mechanical designs of the original series while maintaining the central thematic focus on music as a bridge between cultures.

The project was written by Sukehiro Tomita, who worked to balance the established legacy of the franchise with a distinct, more contemporary aesthetic for the nineties. While the series featured high production values and notable animation quality for its time, it received a mixed reception from the core fanbase, primarily because it diverged significantly from the creative vision of original creator Shoji Kawamori. Over time, it has occupied a complex space in the franchise history, often viewed as an experimental side-story that highlights the versatility of the Macross setting.
