Macross (IMURA Shinji)

The Macross manga adaptation by Shinji Imura emerged during the early 1980s as part of the broader promotional wave following the monumental success of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime. Produced in an era when anime-to-manga adaptations served as vital companion pieces for domestic audiences, the work sought to distill the complex mechanical designs and romantic subplots of the original television series into a serialized graphic format.

Shinji Imura’s approach to the adaptation focused on translating the high-octane aerial combat of the variable fighters into the static, panel-based language of manga. While the series was received as a supplementary exploration of the SDF-1’s journey, it remains a notable example of the era’s industry practice, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese science fiction illustration prevalent in the post-Space Battleship Yamato animation boom.
