Where it came from
The Macross volume authored by Jun Masuda serves as a unique entry within the expansive transmedia landscape of the Macross franchise. Produced during a period of fervent growth for the series in the 1980s and 90s, this work was conceived to capture the intricate technical and emotional narratives that define the saga, bridging the gap between the original animated series' grand space-opera scope and the intimate, character-driven storytelling favored in print adaptations.
Masuda's approach emphasizes the mechanical aesthetic and the hallmark 'Macross' tension between military conflict and idol culture. The design and illustration style were intended to evoke the kinetic energy of the franchise's iconic variable fighter dogfights, reflecting the creative sensibilities common to the era's light novel and manga companion volumes. It remains a notable documentation of how creators translated the high-concept visual language of anime into the static, focused medium of the printed page.
