Maria of Granada

Maria of Granada was written and illustrated by the influential manga artist Mizuno Hideko, serialized in the late 1960s. As a pioneer of the shojo manga genre, Mizuno was instrumental in transitioning girls' comics from simple gag strips toward the complex, romantic, and dramatic storytelling that characterizes the medium today. This work emerged during a period of significant innovation in manga, reflecting a move toward narratives with historical or European settings, which were favored by readers of the time for their evocative escapism.

The design and narrative tone of the work embody the refined aesthetic sensibilities Mizuno cultivated throughout her career. By focusing on intricate character expressions and emotional interiority, Mizuno aimed to elevate the visual language of shojo manga, distancing it from its more rudimentary origins. The work was well-received by contemporary audiences, helping to solidify Mizuno's reputation as a foundational figure whose stylistic choices paved the way for the later success of the Year 24 Group and the continued evolution of the shojo genre.
