Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Sayonara

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Sayonara is a manga adaptation by Hiroyuki Kitazume, who served as a character designer and key animator for the original 1985 anime series. This volume emerged as part of the broader effort to revisit and reinterpret the narrative of the Gryps Conflict, reflecting the franchise's tendency to offer multiple, often conflicting, iterations of the same seminal storyline. As a manga adaptation, it provides a unique window into the artistic evolution of the series, distilling the complex political and military drama of the Zeta Gundam era into a more intimate, illustrated format.

Kitazume’s approach to this work is heavily informed by his direct involvement in the anime's production, resulting in character renditions that remain remarkably faithful to the iconic aesthetic of the mid-1980s. The design choices prioritize emotional weight and character interaction, hallmarks of his signature style. While the Zeta Gundam franchise has spawned numerous spin-offs and side stories, this work is recognized for its dedication to the source material's visual language, serving as a nostalgic touchstone for fans who appreciate the specific stylistic sensibilities of the original animation staff.
