Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 1

Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 1, released in English by Viz Media in 2020, serves as the introduction to a reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes universe. Written by Ryosuke Takeuchi and illustrated by Hikaru Miyoshi, the series shifts the narrative perspective to William James Moriarty, presenting him as a criminal mastermind driven by a desire to dismantle the rigid British class structure of the late 19th century.

The series draws heavily from historical Victorian aesthetics and the classic detective tropes established by Doyle, yet it consciously subverts them by framing the antagonist as a vigilante anti-hero. Upon its original serialization in Japan beginning in 2016, the manga gained popularity for its dramatic art style and thematic focus on social justice, eventually leading to its widespread translation and a subsequent anime adaptation that further expanded the franchise's reach.
