Movie Novel: A Woman's Hundred Faces

A Woman's Hundred Faces, or Onna no Hyakumenso, stands as a notable contribution to the genre of movie novels, or eiga shosetsu, which gained traction in early 20th-century Japan. Published during a period when the burgeoning cinema industry was beginning to deeply influence print culture, the work reflects the fascination with the female image and the performative nature of stardom in the Taisho era.

The volume features the distinct illustrative style of Okamoto Ippei, a seminal figure in Japanese caricature and manga who co-founded the Tokyo Manga Kai. Ippei utilized his signature fluid, expressive lines to capture the emotive quality of the cinematic subjects, aiming to bridge the gap between static print and the dynamic energy of moving pictures. The work is widely regarded as a successful fusion of literary narrative and visual storytelling that helped elevate the status of movie-themed literature among the urban Japanese public.
