Mugen no Junin

Mugen no Junin, known in English as Blade of the Immortal, began its serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in 1993. Created by Hiroaki Samura, the series was conceived as a challenging exploration of the chanbara genre, subverting traditional samurai tropes through its focus on a cursed, immortal protagonist, Manji. Samura's distinct artistic style, which frequently utilized pencil and charcoal techniques rather than traditional ink brushes, provided the work with a gritty, visceral texture that distinguished it from contemporary manga.

The narrative follows Manji, a swordsman who must kill one thousand evil men to regain his mortality after being cursed with bloodworms. Samura’s design choices were heavily influenced by his interest in anatomy and realistic combat dynamics, aiming for a grounded, often brutal depiction of violence. The series received significant critical acclaim, including an Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2000 and an Eisner Award in 2000 for Best U.S. Edition of International Material, cementing its reputation as a seminal work in seinen manga.
