Ohikkoshi

Ohikkoshi is a collection of short stories by Hiroaki Samura, published in the late 1990s as the artist transitioned away from the long-term serialization of his breakout hit, Blade of the Immortal. Compiled to showcase his versatility, the volume serves as a departure from his signature jidaigeki themes, exploring contemporary settings and diverse narrative structures that highlight his experimental approach to sequential storytelling.

The design and illustration within this collection reflect Samura’s distinct, sketch-heavy aesthetic, characterized by dense hatching and fluid, dynamic anatomy. Rather than adhering to the rigid polish of mainstream manga, these stories prioritize atmospheric grit and emotional ambiguity. Upon release, the volume was well-received by fans of his specific visual style, solidifying his reputation as an auteur capable of maintaining a striking artistic signature even when working within the constraints of varied, shorter narrative forms.
