Where it came from
My Brother's Husband was originally serialized in Monthly Action beginning in 2014, marking a significant shift for Gengoroh Tagame. Known primarily for his work in the gay erotic manga genre, Tagame pivoted here to a mainstream, slice-of-life narrative that explores cultural friction and familial bonds. The story follows a Japanese father whose life is disrupted by the arrival of his late twin brother's Canadian husband, providing a poignant examination of LGBTQ+ acceptance in contemporary Japan.
The English-language publication, released by Pantheon in 2017, features a translation and design approach intended to preserve Tagame's expressive, character-focused linework. The series was met with widespread critical acclaim for its gentle, empathetic tone and ability to tackle complex social issues without resorting to melodrama. It eventually earned an Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material, cementing its status as an important work in the international manga canon.
