My Brother's Husband, Volumes 1 & 2: Eisner Award

My Brother's Husband was originally serialized in the Japanese magazine Monthly Action between 2014 and 2017. Created by Gengoroh Tagame, an artist primarily known for his work in the gay erotic manga genre, this series marked a significant departure into mainstream, all-ages storytelling. Tagame intended to explore the cultural friction and eventual empathy between a Japanese father and his deceased twin brother's Canadian husband, aiming to shed light on LGBTQ+ issues within the relatively conservative context of Japanese society.

The series received widespread critical acclaim for its nuanced approach to familial bonds and grief. It was awarded the Excellence Prize at the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2015 and later earned the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia in 2018. Readers and critics praised Tagame for his sensitive characterizations and his ability to bridge cultural gaps through a gentle, humanistic narrative that advocates for inclusivity and understanding.
