Where it came from
My Brother's Husband, Volume 2, serves as the poignant conclusion to Gengoroh Tagame’s celebrated manga series. Originally serialized in Japan in the mid-2010s, the work marked a notable shift for Tagame, who was previously best known for his influential contributions to the underground gay erotica scene. With this series, he aimed to create an accessible, empathetic narrative that explored contemporary Japanese perspectives on LGBTQ+ issues through the lens of a domestic family drama.
The design and narrative tone of the volume were crafted to bridge cultural divides, focusing on the unexpected arrival of a Canadian man, Mike, who travels to Japan to visit the family of his deceased husband. Tagame employed a clean, detailed illustrative style that emphasizes character expression and quiet, domestic moments. The series was widely praised for its gentle handling of social friction and grief, eventually receiving the Excellence Award at the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2015 for its contribution to broader public discourse.
