Where it came from
Naoki Urasawa's Monster was serialized in Big Comic Original between 1994 and 2001, emerging during a period when seinen manga began to explore more complex, psychological thriller narratives. Urasawa crafted the series as a tension-filled exploration of the value of human life, centered on Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese neurosurgeon in Germany who faces a harrowing moral dilemma after saving a young boy who grows up to be a serial killer. The narrative was heavily influenced by Urasawa's interest in Western cinema, particularly the works of Alfred Hitchcock and the atmospheric storytelling of The Fugitive.
The English-language edition published by Viz Media, featuring the ISBN 9781421505008, represents the debut volume of the Perfect Edition series. This release was meticulously designed to present the manga in a premium, larger format that honors Urasawa’s cinematic paneling and detailed linework. Upon its initial serialization and subsequent international releases, Monster was critically acclaimed for its masterful pacing and deep philosophical questions, eventually earning multiple awards including the Shogakukan Manga Award and a position as one of the most respected works in the suspense genre.
