Where it came from
Monster was originally serialized in Big Comic Original between 1994 and 2001, reflecting Naoki Urasawa's meticulous approach to the psychological thriller genre. Volume 15 represents the later stages of the narrative, following Dr. Kenzo Tenma's harrowing pursuit of Johan Liebert across post-Cold War Germany. The series was heavily influenced by Urasawa's interest in European settings and suspense cinema, aiming to explore the inherent capacity for evil within human nature through a grounded, cinematic storytelling style.
The English localization, published by Viz Media, maintained the artistic integrity of the original Japanese release while introducing the series to a broader Western audience. Urasawa is widely recognized for his draftsmanship and ability to weave complex, non-linear subplots into a cohesive mystery. Upon its release, the series received critical acclaim and multiple awards, including the Shogakukan Manga Award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, solidifying its reputation as a modern classic in the suspense manga canon.
