Where it came from
Natural was serialized in LaLa magazine starting in the mid-1990s, representing a significant creative turn for Narita Minako following the success of her earlier work, Cygnus. The series explores themes of identity, human connections, and the intersection of nature and modern life through the lives of a group of university students in New York City. By placing her characters in a global urban setting, Narita crafted a narrative that felt distinct from the school-focused shojo manga of the era, focusing instead on the complex personal growth of young adulthood.
The visual aesthetic of the series is defined by Narita's refined, elegant linework and her meticulous attention to character fashion and posture. Critics and readers alike noted the series for its understated storytelling and the maturity of its character developments, which set it apart from more melodramatic genre counterparts. As a cornerstone of Narita's bibliography, Natural solidified her reputation for creating grounded, character-driven narratives that emphasize the subtle nuances of interpersonal relationships.
