Neudrucke frühneuenglischer grammatiken: pt.1. Charles Butler's English grammar (1634), hrsg. von A. Eichler

The Neudrucke frühneuenglischer grammatiken series was initiated in the early 20th century to provide scholarly, faithful reproductions of early modern English grammars. Published in Halle by Max Niemeyer, this project was designed to assist philologists and historical linguists in tracing the evolution of English orthography, phonology, and syntax during the transition from the Elizabethan era to the Restoration.

This first volume, edited by Albert Eichler and published in 1910, centers on Charles Butler’s 1634 'The English Grammar'. Butler was a multifaceted scholar known for his interest in bee-keeping and music as well as language reform. His grammar is historically significant for its radical proposals on phonetic spelling, which reflected the broader intellectual ambition of 17th-century thinkers to standardize and rationalize the English language for improved literacy and communication.
