Novellen und Romane

Paul Heyse was a prolific German writer and a central figure in the Munich literary scene during the late 19th century. This collection of novellas and novels reflects his adherence to the formal standards of the German Novelle, a genre he helped define through his theoretical work and own creative output. As a recipient of the 1910 Nobel Prize in Literature, Heyse’s work was widely disseminated in the decades surrounding the turn of the century, serving as a pillar of bourgeois literary culture in the German-speaking world.

The editorial design and presentation of such volumes were typical of the era’s publishing houses, which sought to balance accessibility for the reading public with a refined, academic aesthetic. Heyse’s reputation was bolstered by his focus on psychological depth and his commitment to the 'Dichter' ideal of the German tradition. While his influence waned significantly in the mid-20th century, these collections remain essential artifacts for understanding the literary tastes and aesthetic values of the Wilhelmine period.
