One Piece, Vol. 3: Don't Get Fooled Again

Released in North America by Viz Media, this volume collects chapters 17 through 25 of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series One Piece. Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1997, the series was created during a period when Oda sought to redefine the shonen adventure genre with his distinctively fluid art style and emphasis on character-driven world-building. This volume specifically features the conclusion of the Buggy the Clown arc and the introduction of the sniper Usopp, highlighting Oda’s early efforts to establish the emotional stakes that define the Straw Hat crew.

The design of the early English editions, including this volume, reflects the localization trends of the early 2000s, utilizing mirrored art and specific localized naming conventions to appeal to a burgeoning Western manga market. Eiichiro Oda’s design philosophy for the series centers on high-energy action panels coupled with expressive, often exaggerated character designs that convey personality even in moments of high tension. Upon release, the series was received as a fresh, humorous, and inventive take on the pirate adventure trope, eventually becoming the best-selling manga series in history.
