Where it came from
Oni-Gokko, written and illustrated by Kuromasa Shisei, emerged during a period of rising interest in visceral, psychological horror within the seinen manga market. The series is part of a thematic exploration of folklore-inspired violence, intentionally subverting traditional concepts of children's games to create a sense of encroaching dread. It was conceived as a narrative experiment in suspense, focusing on the claustrophobic atmosphere generated by its central survival premise.
The aesthetic of the series is characterized by Kuromasa Shisei’s stark, high-contrast line work and an emphasis on unsettling character expressions. The design choices were aimed at stripping away ornamentation to heighten the focus on the protagonists' psychological deterioration. Upon its release, the series garnered a dedicated following among readers of dark fantasy, appreciated specifically for its uncompromising tone and the author’s deliberate pacing in delivering tension.
