Oni-goroshi

Oni-goroshi, written and illustrated by Kawabe Masamichi, emerged as a notable title within the seinen manga landscape of the early 2000s. Published during a period when dark, psychological, and gritty action narratives were finding a dedicated audience in magazines like Weekly Manga Goraku, the series explores themes of retribution and the supernatural. The title itself, meaning 'demon slayer,' reflects the visceral nature of the narrative, which balances stylized violence with a somber, brooding atmosphere characteristic of the era's mature seinen works.

Kawabe Masamichi’s aesthetic for the series is defined by bold line work and high-contrast shading, a design choice intended to emphasize the brutality and intensity of the protagonist's journey. By grounding the supernatural elements within a realistic, urban setting, the author sought to heighten the sense of dread and urgency throughout the story. While the series maintains a niche following, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of dark, atmospheric manga for its uncompromising visual style and its thematic focus on the weight of vengeance.
