Oni Jidai

Oni Jidai represents a notable entry in the late twentieth-century tradition of dark fantasy manga. Emerging during a period when the seinen demographic saw a surge in interest for folklore-inspired narratives, the series explores the intersection of feudal history and supernatural horror. It was crafted by the mangaka Azuma, who utilized a distinct, high-contrast ink style to emphasize the grotesque nature of its titular demons, grounding the fantastical elements in a gritty, period-accurate aesthetic.

The reception of the series was largely characterized by praise for its atmospheric world-building and the visceral quality of its illustrations. Critics often highlighted how the work challenged traditional tropes of the genre by focusing on the psychological erosion of its protagonists rather than mere action. While it remains a niche title, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of the era for its consistent thematic depth and the deliberate, deliberate pacing of its visual storytelling.
