Where it came from
Oni is a manga work by Osamu Kanno, emerging from the distinct landscape of late 20th-century seinen and dark fantasy manga. Kanno is known for a moody, atmospheric aesthetic that leans into the surreal and the grotesque, reflecting a period in the Japanese underground comics scene where creators explored folklore and psychological horror with heightened graphic sensibilities.
The series focuses on the evocative imagery of the titular oni—Japanese demons—reimagined through Kanno's stark, high-contrast illustration style. The work is regarded by collectors of cult manga as a quintessential example of independent artistic expression, valued more for its unsettling visual narrative and stylistic cohesion than for mainstream popularity.
