Where it came from
Released in the wake of the massive 2015 revival of the Osomatsu-kun franchise, the Osomatsu-san Official Comic Anthology: Gesu serves as a curated collection of short stories and illustrations from various artists. The anthology was commissioned by the publisher to capitalize on the subversive, adult-oriented humor that defined the reimagined series, which depicted the Matsuno sextuplets as directionless, unemployed young adults. This specific volume focuses on the 'Gesu' theme, highlighting the characters' more morally questionable and chaotic traits that endeared them to a modern fan base.
The volume features work by Yoshimoto Masume, alongside a group of guest contributors chosen for their distinct comedic styles. The editorial goal was to provide a satirical, irreverent expansion of the television series' tone, utilizing manga as a medium to push the characters into scenarios too brief or absurd for a standard episode. Upon release, the anthology was received as a standard but highly targeted companion piece for enthusiasts of the show's dark comedy, solidifying its place in the extensive library of franchise merchandise produced during the series' peak popularity.
