Where it came from
Outen no Mon, written and illustrated by Haibara Yaku, began serialization in 2013 within the pages of Monthly Comic Bunch. The series is a historical drama centered on the Heian period in Japan, specifically focusing on the lives and political maneuvering of the poet Sugawara no Michizane and the nobleman Ariwara no Narihira. The narrative functions as a mystery-laden chronicle of the intrigue surrounding the Oten Gate incident, blending meticulous period research with character-driven storytelling.
Haibara Yaku designed the series to capture the atmospheric tension of the imperial court, utilizing a refined art style that emphasizes historical accuracy in costume and architectural detail. The manga has been lauded for its academic grounding and the sophisticated portrayal of its protagonists, often being recognized for its ability to humanize figures who are otherwise relegated to the status of literary icons or legendary court figures. It remains a well-regarded title in the seinen historical genre.
