Where it came from
Outer Zone was created by manga artist Mitsuharu Shin and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1991. The series functions as an anthology of horror and psychological suspense stories, centered around the mysterious Misery, a curator of an otherworldly shop that deals in items capable of granting desires at a heavy, often ironic, moral cost.
The design of the series leans into the grotesque and the surreal, heavily influenced by the tradition of Japanese supernatural storytelling and anthology television series like The Twilight Zone. Mitsuharu Shin utilized a stark, high-contrast artistic style to heighten the atmosphere of unease, which resonated with readers during the early 1990s as it provided a darker alternative to the mainstream action-oriented titles prevalent in the magazine at the time.
