Where it came from
Released in 2016, The Murkoff Account is a digital comic series created by the developers at Red Barrels to expand the lore of their survival horror franchise, Outlast. The series was designed to bridge the narrative gap between the original game and its sequel, Outlast 2, focusing on the insidious activities of the Murkoff Corporation and the aftermath of the Mount Massive Asylum incident.
The illustrations were produced by a team at Red Barrels in collaboration with comic artist Chris Williams, aiming for a gritty, cinematic visual style that mirrored the game’s tense, oppressive atmosphere. The series was received positively by the dedicated player base, as it provided much-needed context to the fragmented storytelling found in the games, helping to solidify the franchise's overarching conspiracy-driven mythos.
