Prince of the Sea

Prince of the Sea, known in Japan as Umi no Ouji, was authored by the legendary duo Fujiko F. Fujio, consisting of Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko. Serialized in the early 1960s, this work emerged during a formative period for the pair before they achieved global fame with Doraemon. It reflects the adventurous spirit of early shonen manga, blending maritime fantasy with the whimsical character design and narrative pacing that would eventually become the hallmark of the Fujiko Studio.

The story follows a young prince from an underwater kingdom who embarks on a journey to the world above, navigating themes of discovery and cultural contrast. As one of their earlier serials, the design emphasizes clean, expressive linework and the imaginative world-building that defined their collaborative style. While it does not share the ubiquity of their later works, it is regarded by collectors as an essential window into the creative evolution of two of Japan's most influential manga artists.
